A photographic exhibition by Jean‑François Dupon, in partnership with Adamah Fine Arts.

Taken between 1965 and 1971, the photographs by Jean‑François Dupon offer a rare view of Mauritius and Rodrigues on the eve of independence. Trained as a geographer, author of a state thesis devoted to the Mascarene Islands and the Seychelles, defended at the University of Aix‑Marseille in 1976, he travelled the two islands as part of his field research.

Originally intended to illustrate academic work, these photographs now constitute a valuable testimony of a society in rapid transformation.

Far from traditional representations of the island, Jean‑François Dupon focuses on everyday scenes: men and women, celebrations, landscapes, sugarcane fields, villages, fishermen, and the streets of Port‑Louis and Port‑Mathurin. Moments of life, simple and authentic, that have endured to become fragments of collective memory.

Drawn from the book Au fil du temps – Mauritius & Rodrigues at the dawn of a new era, the exhibition is organised around several major themes that reveal different facets of Mauritian society of the 1960s.

More than a dive into the past, Au fil du temps invites you to rediscover Mauritius and Rodrigues through the attentive gaze of a witness to their history. These photographs remind us that the memory of a territory is also built through its gestures, its places and its ordinary scenes. Such traces, over time, acquire a unique heritage value.
