FREDERIC AVELLA

Born in 1975 into a family of master stonemasonsspanning four generations, Fred Avella was immersed in the family business from a very young age. At the age of 12, his father taught him how to polish, cut, and shape various stone and marble pieces.

At the age of 21, the municipality of Sanary, located on the French Riviera, chose FRED to carry out the complete renovation of several public fountains and statues.

His contemporary work offers a variety of finishes while being influenced by today's French design industry regarding ideas about pop culture, cartoons, and comic strips. He created "Freud," his first series of sculptures, manifesting his intention to demystify different animals with proportions, exaggerations, round lines, and personification.

Frederic Avella’s concept is to parody the serious character in a fun, almost burlesque way, drawing on the role that animal imagery plays in pop culture—often used for brand logos or as sports mascots. Yet the animal’s characteristics remain loyal, faithful, courageous, powerful, and strong. He creates, reimagines, and personalizes animal subjects by giving them a touch of candy-colored pop art aesthetics and vibrant finishes.
