MARIELA GARIBAY
MARIELA GARIBAY (Lima, Peru 1976) graduated in sculpture from the University of Peru (PUCP) and holds a master's degree in urban design from the University of Barcelona in 2008.
She twice received the Winternitz Prize in 1997 and 1999 and won first prize in the national drawing competition in 2005. Her first solo exhibition dates back to 2004, with stone as her primary material.
She has completed several public commissions in Peru, teaches at the Ayacucho School of Fine Arts and at the PUCP. She permanently exhibits her work in galleries and develops her technique with bronze.
MARIELA GARIBAY tells us that sculpture is not only form, but the language that the artist has chosen to communicate and the result of prior internalization work on the message she transmits. Sculpture is a discipline that requires patience, many hours of work and love.
A love for the idea, the work, the message and the unknown that will one day discover it. This is essential to the success of the work. Months can pass between the development of a drawing and the realization of the work. Sculpture is a slow but sure process. All these hours of reflection, maturation, work and love given, make me aware of the value of things, she confides.
Her work is figurative but not realistic. MARIELA GARIBAY observes the world around her and transcribes it with great tenderness through characters with childish roundness. MARIELA GARIBAY's sculpture is positive and generous, it immortalizes a moment of happiness captured by the artist, a moment of peace, a good memory, a smile, a surprise, simple and sincere joy.
