Mariela Garibay
Mariela Garibay(Lima, Peru 1976) holds a degree in sculpture from the University of Peru (PUCP) and a master's degree in urban design from the University of Barcelona in 2008.
She was twice awarded the Winternitz Prize in 1997 and 1999, and won first prize in the national drawing competition in 2005. Her first solo exhibition dates back to 2004, with stone as her primary material.
She carries out several public commissions in Peru, and teaches at the Ayacucho Fine Arts School and the PUCP. She exhibits her work permanently in galleries and develops her bronze technique.
Mariela tells us that sculpture is not only form, but also the language the artist has chosen to communicate, and the result of prior internalization work on the message it transmits. Sculpture is a discipline that requires patience, many hours of work and love.
A love for the idea, the work, the message and the unknown person who will one day discover it. This is essential to the success of the work. It can take months from the drawing board to the finished piece. Sculpture is a slow but sure process. All those hours of reflection, maturing, work and love, make me realize the value of things," she confides.
Her work is figurative but not realistic. Mariela Garibay observes the world around her and transcribes it with a great deal of tenderness through characters with childlike curves. Mariela Garibay's sculpture is positive and generous, immortalizing a moment of happiness captured by the artist, a moment of peace, a good memory, a smile, a surprise, simple, sincere joy.
