Jil Joannin

Jil Joannin, a French artist born in 1994, develops a work at the intersection of painting, sculpture and installation, guided by an instinctive and physical relationship to matter. Like many artists inhabited by matter, Jil feels the visceral need to go beyond the simple plane to approach the truth of volume, through a modeling that requires the direct participation, carnal, of the hand. Formed to the requirements of drawing and fashion, her trajectory swings when she meets with the sculptor Mauro Corda, a brute immersion in the relief that drives her to acquire ceramics in self-taught, refusing any intermediary between the work and the epidermis.

Her work, suspended between France and the shores of Mauritius, is a celebration of the tellurical and oceanic forces. This dialogue between two geographies irrigates a practice recognized both on the French scene and internationally. In 2022, her collaboration with Mercedes Techstar illustrates her ability to register her work in unexpected and demanding contexts. In 2023, she is invited to exhibit at the Espace d’art d’Amiens Métropole from September to November and then at the Domaine des Bruyères in Amiens, confirming the growing interest her work arouses in cultural institutions and private collectors.

Sensitive to the deep movements of nature, she captures the breath of the wind, the slow erosion of volcanic rocks and the dynamics of foam. Through an intimate dialogue between painting, architectural installations and organic sculptures, she incorporates inert elements to suggest the outbreak of life. Under her fingers, mineral rugosity and metal reflections combine to shape a universe free from human presence, restored to its primary values. Her works, powerful and timeless, oscillate magistrally between figuration and abstraction, revealing themselves as sources of both aesthetic emotions and profound reflections on time.
